Standing Up for Standing Out

Time to think big. An international project. A Pritzker-Prize-winning architect. The tallest residential tower in Stockholm. Times two. In a historically low-rise low-key city known for (for better and for worse) a certain restraint, designer Rem Koolhaas of OMA envisioned two residential skyscrapers using innovative prefabricated construction and a skyscraping profile. We brought things down to human scale by highlighting the handmade craftsmanship and fine texture of details like hand-hammered concrete facades, and the surprising coziness of sky-high dwellings with floor-to-ceiling windows, secluded terraces, and smartly-arranged floor plans. Renderings of unusual skill were used to convey subtle detailing and a welcoming but sophisticated atmosphere—and showed how the architecture, for all its 250-meter height, blended seamlessly into the colors and textures of Stockholm’s urban fabric, and into a tradition of Scandinavian Modernism.
